Alcoa Partners with Winsted Middle Schools to Create a More Sustainable Future

Program teaches students how to save energy at home and compete for prizes

in the second annual Make an Impact: Change Our 2morrow (CO2) challenge

Alcoa Howmet Winsted, in association with the Alcoa Foundation and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, is partnering with the Gilbert Middle School and Northwestern Region 7 Middle School to challenge students, parents, teachers, and our community to learn how to use energy more efficiently while having a chance to win a $5,000 or $1,000 grant from the Alcoa Foundation.

The Gilbert Middle School and Northwestern Region #7 Middle School are participating alongside 10 other schools from Alcoa communities across the country. The winning schools will be determined based on the highest number of Make an Impact carbon calculators and energy efficiency checklist completions during the challenge, as a percentage of the school’s student population. The initiative runs from February 1 to February 29, 2012.

What can you do to help one of our schools win the $5,000 grant?

Starting February 1st:

  • Browse the Make an Impact School Challenge website http://alcoa.c2es.org/challenge and learn about energy efficiency.
  • Complete the carbon calculator and/or energy efficiency checklist on behalf of The Gilbert School or Northwestern Region #7 Middle School.
  • Track how our community is doing by following the Leader board
  • Apply what you learned in your home!
